Ayrshire & Arran

Ayrshire and Arran NHS Trust have been rationalising their property holdings as part of an ongoing improvement and upgrade programme at the Ayrshire Central Hospital. On one of the buildings scheduled for disposal, there are two Ceragon microwave systems linking Ayrshire Central in Irvine to Crosshouse Hospital and Ayr Hospital.

This building is the highest point on the hospital, and line of sight survey investigation proved that no other areas on the existing buildings had sufficient elevation to ensure the clear, unobstructed line of sight required for an error free microwave link. The fixed link options proposed by the telecommunications carriers were perceived by the trust as being a very expensive alternative to owning their own infrastructure.

Aerelink were approached by the Trust and asked what other solutions would be viable. The most cost effective solution was the building of a structure in the hospital grounds specifically for the two links. Aerelink were contracted to design and build a suitable tower.

A survey was conducted and construction started of a 30 metre, Galliford Try tower, with a Latchway safety system, and underground ducting into the nearby estates department office. The tower has been rigged for feeder, and the microwave systems have been migrated and upgraded to provide greater connectivity for the trust.
